António Carvalho de Silva Porto

António Carvalho da Silva Porto ( born October 11, 1850 in Porto, Portugal, † June 11, 1893 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese painter.

Life

In his hometown of Porto da Silva Carvalho learned his first art lessons in the studios of painters João António Correia and Tadeu d' Almeida Furtado. Together with his friend and colleague João Marques de Oliveira in the summer of 1873 he went to Paris. There he became a student at the École des Beaux -Arts, among other things, taught by Adolphe Yvon and Alexandre Cabanel.

Through his teacher Carvalho de Silva Porto was invited to attend the great annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon. From the audience as well as praised by art critics, he was in 1878 also invited to exhibit at the World Exhibition in Paris.

The following year, he made ​​an extensive study trip to and through Italy and the end of the same year he returned to his homeland. He settled in his native city, where he founded his own studio. Later he went to Lisbon, where he founded in 1881 - along with José Malhoa, Rafael and Culumbano Bordalo Pinheiro - the artists' association Grupo do Leão.

At 42, António Carvalho de Silva Porto died on 11 June 1893 in Lisbon and found his final resting place.

Honors

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of António Carvalho de Silva Porto created by the sculptor Salvador Barata Feyo 1950 on behalf of the city of Porto, a bust of him.
