António da Cunha Telles

António da Cunha Telles Cohen ( born February 26, 1935 in Funchal, Madeira) is a Portuguese film director and producer.

Life and work

Cunha Telles studied medicine in Lisbon first, but then went to Paris. He lived there from 1956 to 1961 and graduated as a director at the Film School IDHEC. In 1962 he began to produce films. He is one of the founders of the Centro Português de Cinema is one of the main characters of the new Portuguese film, the Cinema Novo. He has also produced two of the key films of the Cinema Novo, Verdes Anos by Paulo Rocha and Fernando Belarmino Lopes. He has to date produced or co-produced, mainly in France and Portugal about 200 films.

As a director he could celebrate with his film O Cerco 1969 successes; the film was successful at the Cannes Film Festival and subsequently received encouragement from both the audience and the critics, both in France and Portugal. He turned even 1974-2004 six more movies, but do not leave a greater impression more with the critics.
