Paulo Rocha

Paulo Soares da Rocha ( born December 22, 1935 in Porto, † December 29, 2012 in Vila Nova de Gaia) was a Portuguese film director.

Career

While studying law in Lisbon, he was active in film clubs. From 1959 to 1961 he lived in Paris, where he finished studying directing at the Film Academy IDHEC. He worked with Jean Renoir at Le caporal épinglé ( " The corporal in the loop ", 1962) and Manoel de Oliveira at Acto da Primavera (1963).

With his first film Os Verdes Anos ( " The Green Years " ) he put 1963, the first work of the emerging Cinema Novo ago, produced by António da Cunha Telles, with music by Carlos Paredes and Rui Gomes, Isabel Ruth and Ruy Furtado in the lead roles. The film won among others the prize for the best first film at the Locarno Film Festival.

Rocha 1969 was co-founder of the Centro Português de Cinema, which he chairs 1973/1974 held. From 1975 to 1983 he lived in Japan, where he was, inter alia, cultural attaché at the Portuguese embassy.
