António de Saldanha

António de Saldanha was a Portuguese explorer.

1503 he sailed with the fleet of Afonso de Albuquerque, as commander of 3 Naos, to India. Due to a navigational error, they landed at circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope in a bay that he Aguada da Saldanha baptized (from Table Bay in 1601, the Dutch then named 140 km to the north bay Saldanha Bay). There he met a few hundred indigenous hunter-gatherers of the Khoe. Since his visit here, Europeans have taken water and provisions. In order to orient himself, he climbed - as the first Europeans - by the Plattekloof Gorge on the mountain he baptized Taboa do Cabo ( Table Mountain ).

From 1505 built Portugal Portuguese India ( Estado da Índia ) and Vasco da Gama in 1506 conquered the islands of Mozambique.

From 1509 until June 24, 1512 António de Saldanha of Portugal was named the first captain of Sofala Mozambique to the east. Sofala was previously part of the large Arab trading network on the East African coast and an Arab trading post, where mainly gold trade was operated.

April 1517 he broke well again with a fleet from Lisbon to the East Indies.

Nuno da Cunha let him in the western Indian Diu with a strong fleet, where he destroyed many towns in the area.
