Antonio José Cañas

Antonio José Cañas Quintanilla (* October 26, 1785 in San Vicente, El Salvador, † February 24, 1844 at the Hacienda Jocomontique, El Salvador) was on May 23, 1839 to July 13, 1839 Supreme Director of the province of El Salvador in the Central American Republic and on January 7, 1841 to February 1, 1842 Supremo Director of El Salvador.

Life

Colonel Antonio José Cañas was a politician, lawyer and Salvadoran military. His family were Latifundisten. He was a relative of José Simeón Cañas y Villacorta. He studied at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, where he became Doctor of Civil Law.

In 1822, he opposed it as a deputy of the Central American republic against the annexation by the Mexican Empire under Agustín de Iturbide. When El Salvador was in 1823 occupied by troops under Vicente Filisola, Antonio José Cañas Quintanilla was the Deputy Commanding General Manuel José Arce, who led the resistance to the Salvadoran troops. In July 1823 he was elected deputy to the Constituent Assembly of the Provincias Unidas del Centro de América, where he served as Speaker. In February 1824 after one term, he was elected by the Parliament for the authorized representative in the United States. In December 1825, he negotiated a mutual friendship treaty between the U.S. and the Provincias Unidas del Centro de America.

In 1826 he returned to El Salvador. From 1826 to 1829 he was a government minister in the cabinet of Pedro Arce. From 1830 to 1832 he was a deputy in the Central American Parliament. He supported the José María Cornejo of the Partido Conservador against Francisco Morazán of the Partido Liberal. When the Partido Conservador was beaten after a rebellion attempt Cañas was arrested in Guatemala and then went to Mexico to 1836 into exile. In May 1838 he was appointed by Timoteo Menéndez to his Minister General. He extended his mandate on the financial and Ministry of War. On May 23, 1839, he was a Council of State, Head of State.

On 11 July 1839 he handed the office of Head of State of Francisco Morazán. From 7 April to 20 September 1840, he was State Council, head of state in this capacity, he was replaced by Norberto Ramírez Áreas. In 1842 he became a deputy, War and Finance in the cabinet of José Marín Escolastico. 1843 was the representative of El Salvador at the conference of Chinandega.
