António José de Ávila, 1st Duke of Ávila and Bolama

António José de Ávila, first Duke and the first Margrave ( Marques ) of Ávila and Bolama ( born May 8, 1806 Faial, Azores, † May 3, 1881 in Lisbon ), was a conservative politician from the period of the constitutional monarchy in Portugal. He was, inter alia, finance minister and three times (1868, 1870-1871, 1877-1878 ) Head of government of his country.

Life

Already with 15 years de Ávila enrolled at the University of Coimbra, where he studied philosophy. There he stood for absolutist reign of King Michael in opposition, he spent the years during which Michael reigned in Portugal, in Paris where he studied medicine. During the Miguelistenkrieges he went to the Azores, his birthplace, where he supported the constitutionalists and a successful local politician was.

After the war he was in 1834 for the Azores for the first time in the Portuguese parliament, the Cortes elected. De Ávila should sit 26 years continuously as a deputy in the Cortes. There he worked as cartistischer deputy who stood in sharp opposition to the Setembristen that yes 1836 took power ( September Revolution in Portugal). Towards the end of setembristischen rule, when Joaquim António de Aguiar in 1841 for the first time took over the government, de Ávila resigned as finance minister in the government. He retained the post in the governments of Costa Cabral (1842-1846) and Terceira, it was not until Saldanha took power in 1851, he resigned from this post. 1857, in the government of the Duke of Loulé he again took over the post of finance minister. As prime minister, succeeded de Ávila a tax that had led to the January protests, again, but his government therefore slid into financial difficulties, so they failed soon.
