Antonio Lamer

Joseph Antonio Charles Lamer, PC, CC ( born July 8, 1933, Montreal, † November 24, 2007 in Ottawa, mostly called Antonio Lamer ) was a Canadian judge and legal scholar. He was a member from 1980 to 2000 the Supreme Court of Canada, and was its chairman from 1990 ( Chief Justice ).

Biography

Lamer served several years in the Canadian Army from 1950 to 1954 in the artillery, then to 1960 in the military administration. During this time he studied law at the University of Montreal. In 1957 he was admitted as a lawyer and practiced in the law firm of Cutler, Lamer, Bellemare and Associates. He also was a professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Montreal, his specialty was the criminology.

From 1969 Lamer was a member of the Supreme Court of Québec, from 1978 to the Court of Appeal of that province. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him on 28 March 1980 a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. On 1 July 1990 the appointment as Chief Justice by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was. Lamer held that post until January 6, 2000. After his resignation, he joined as a consultant with the law firm Stikeman Elliott in Toronto.
