Antonio Venier

Antonio Venier († November 23, 1400 ) was the 62nd Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1382 to 1400. During his reign, destroyed in the War of Chioggia port of Chioggia was reattached.

Family

Life

Venier was obviously an embarrassment candidate, because you could not on a corner, Gradenigo, Loredan or Zen, all members of the old families, some. The news of his election reached him on the island of Crete, where he worked for the Republic. On his arrival he was picked up at the Lido solemnly with the Palazzo Stern. His election was celebrated for an entire year according to contemporary information with festivities, balls, races and bull fights.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the port, he arranged for various construction projects, such as the paving of the Piazza San Marco.

In the Adriatic, Venice could claim control of Scutari, Durazzo and Corfu against Turkish expansion efforts, and eventually close a beneficial Venice peace. In northern Italy, however, the Republic was under pressure by the Visconti, who had an alliance with the Habsburgs against Venice closed and the succession of Verona, Vicenza, Padua and could conquer other northern Italian cities.

His last years were overshadowed by the problems of his son Alvise, who had been sentenced to the wife of a patrician for libel and he did not pardon even though he was ill in prison. Alvise died in prison and Venier fell into depression, from which he never recovered. He died on 23 November to 1400.

His tomb is located above the portal of the Cappella del Rosario in the Church of Saints John and Paul, in the immediate vicinity of the tomb for the dogaressa Agnese da Mosto and his daughter Ursula Venier.
