Antonius Mathijsen

Antonius Mathijsen (* November 4, 1805 in Budel, the Netherlands, † June 15, 1878 in Hamont, Belgium) was a Dutch doctor. In 1851 he invented the plaster cast. Since its invention, this has not been fundamentally changed.

Life

Antonius Mathijsen was the son of surgeon Ludovicus Hermanus ( Herman Lodewijk ) Mathijsen and his wife Petronella Bogaers. He completed his studies in Brussels and was ship surgeon with the Dutch Navy. There, in the service he invented the plaster cast.

1941 honored the Netherlands Mathijsen with a postage stamp.
