Antun Bauer (museologist)

Antun Bauer ( born August 18, 1911 in Vukovar, † April 9, 2000 in Zagreb) was a Yugoslav art historians, collectors and museologist.

Bauer attended the elementary school in Vukovar and the gymnasium in Osijek, he received his doctorate in 1935 at the University of Vienna. From 1936 to 1945 he worked as an assistant and lecturer at the University of Zagreb.

1937 Bauer founded the Zagreb Glyptothek ( with casts of antique sculptures). From 1952 to 1968 he headed the school museum in Zagreb and in 1964 he founded the " Muzejski dokumentacioni centar " ( Museum Documentation Centre ) in Zagreb, which he directed until 1976. 1949 and 1951 he organized, among other exhibitions, the exhibition of Yugoslav art of the Middle Ages in Paris and Zagreb. As one of its main merit is considered the rescue of the equestrian statue of Ban Jelacic Square in the basement of the Zagreb Glyptothek.
