Anvil (Band)

Anvil (English, anvil ' ) is a Canadian heavy metal band. It is now considered one of the forerunners of speed metal that came rolling in the early 1980s.

Band History

The origins of Anvil located in Toronto, where Steve Kudlow and Robb Reiner began in April 1973 to make music together. 1978, formed the first solid lineup under the name LIPS: Steve " Lips" Kudlow (vocals, guitar), Robb Reiner (drums ), Dave Allison (guitar, vocals) and Ian Dickson ( bass).

In 1981, the band released an independent album called Hard ' n' Heavy. Shortly after they had signed a record deal with Attic Records, the band changed its name to Anvil, because at the same time under the name Lipps, Inc. existed a disco band. The album Hard ' n ' Heavy now appeared as a debut at Attic.

The band played until then a little eye-catching Hard Rock, this changed radically under the influence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with the 1982 released second album Metal on Metal. The band underwent a substantial increase in hardness and especially at speed. The style change was underlined by the 1983 work of Forged in Fire again, with particularly Lips' idiosyncratic vocals and Reiners precise, powerful double bass drumming proved to be sound formative. The two albums produced by Chris Tsangarides are considered classics of the band.

The band then but a few years instead of the hoped-for breakthrough disappeared from the scene in order to report back until 1987 when U.S. label Metal Blade Records with the disc Strength Of Steel. After a few more publications and the interim exit by Allison Anvil moved in 1991 to a maximum of Records, the Canadian label the former helix Manager William Seip. From 1996 to 2007 Anvil stood at Hypnotic Records in Canada and Massacre Records in Germany under contract. But on their status in the early 1980s (including appearance at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donington 1982 ), the band was not able.

In 2009 she played in some performances by AC / DC on their Black Ice World Tour in North America as well as in some performances of Saxon England as the opening act. On 6 October the same year they had the occasion of the DVD release of the documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil made ​​an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, in which they played Metal on Metal. On October 18, they were headlining on the Sanctuary Stage at the Loud Park Festival in Chiba, Japan.

In June and July 2010 they embarked on a headlining tour through Europe. Anvil played in England, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. They also played at festivals in Finland, Sweden, France, Italy and Germany.

In May 2013, the album was released Hope In Hell. In this album the first time was heard the new bassist Sal Italiano. He joined the band, as Glenn "Five" Gyorffy left the band in 2012 due to artistic differences. Hope in Hell was produced as before Juggernaut of Justice by Bob Marlette, who contributed much to the songwriting and especially to the arrangements according Lips information. The band will be in the fall of 2013 touring in Europe, and there are festival shows in the summer of 2014 planned.

Importance

Anvils early works Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire are considered as characteristic for the speed and thrash metal. The albums released before the debut of the genre classics from Metallica and Slayer. Because of the temporal projection Anvil remained an underground band.

Documentary

Was published in 2009 Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by Sacha Gervasi, a film about the band, which received many positive reviews and Anvil moved more into the public consciousness again. The German release title is Anvil! The story of a friendship. The documentary was released in Germany on 11 March 2010.
