The Donington Park Circuit is a motorsport race track in England. It is located near the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire, and directly adjacent to the East Midlands Airport. The nearest city is Birmingham.

The track is the venue for many motor races and music festivals. 15 times instead of 2002 occurred on the Ozzfest tour: Among other things, the Monsters of Rock festival was held there between 1980 and 1996 (Download Festival now). 1993 also hosted the Formula 1 at Donington Park. To route a part of since 1973 and the Donington Grand Prix Collection, a museum with the world's largest collection of Grand Prix racing cars.

History

Track layout

The circuit was opened in 1931. At this time the course had a route length of 3.525 km. In 1934, an additional hairpin was built behind the Redgate; the new route length was 4.104 kilometers. In 1937 the Melbourne Corner was built, leading to the new route length of 5.029 km. In 1977, a new building of the route shortened this to 3.150 km. In 1985 the construction of the new Melbourne Hairpin, and led to the current route length with 4.023 km. For the return of Formula 1 in 2010, a renewed conversion was applied. The course should be extended by an additional loop before Start-/Ziel-Bereich by about 800 meters. In addition, the start and finish line should be moved to the " Starkey's Straight". For a better overtaking opportunity to the " Esses " - curve are abbreviated, so you can go faster in the " Melbourne Hairpin ". This variant, however, was never built.

Racing events

1993 Formula 1 Grand Prix at Donington was held the first and so far last time also with the European Grand Prix. The wet race is still regarded by experts as the best performance of the 1994 deceased ex- world champion Ayrton Senna, who dominated his opponents on the hilly track in an underpowered car at will and won.

Currently are held on the track both races in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC ) and the British Formula 3 series.

From 1987 till 2009 was also held the Grand Prix of Great Britain, the World Motorcycle Championship, which takes place since 2010 back on track at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.

From the Formula 1 season 2010, the Donington Park Circuit should host the Grand Prix of Great Britain will, thus replacing the traditional circuit at Silverstone as the host of the British Grand Prix. The agreed FIA, FOA and the track owner of the Donington Park Circuit. Due to financial difficulties of the operating company, the contract was terminated, however, the part of the FOA.
