Aouzou, Chad

Region

Aouzou (Arabic أوزو, also Aozou ) is a small town and oasis with 1,300 inhabitants in northern Chad within the Aouzou strip. She became famous in the Aouzou conflict ( 1978-1987 ). The city was filled with the Aouzou Strip in 1994 formally under the control of Chad.

Geography

The area around Aouzou is the Tibesti region with a total population of 22,000. The region is also called " mountain country of hunger ." The next town is Bardai, about 70 air miles to the south. There is also an airstrip. Approximately 100 km to the north runs the Libyan border.

Climate

The maximum temperatures are around 30 ° C in the lowlands and 20 ° C in the high altitudes of the mountains. In the winter months, however, this drops to about 12 in the lowlands and 9 ° C in the high altitudes.
