Aparicio Méndez

Aparicio Méndez Manfredini ( born August 24, 1904 in Rivera, Uruguay, † June 26, 1988 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician and president of his country from 1976 to 1981.

Méndez was a member of the Partido Nacional, which represents the interests of rural areas, came from the Méndez itself.

He studied law at the Universidad de la República and was an expert in administrative law and on April 13, 1961 to June 16, 1964 Health Minister of his country.

After the military coup Méndez was one of the civilian members of the Consejo de Estado and in 1976 was elected president. One of the first acts of his reign was the deprivation of civil rights of all persons who were involved in the political scene 1966-1973. The number of political prisoners in 1976 was about 6,000.

A template for a new constitution was rejected on 30 November 1980 by 57.2 % of the electorate. In September 1981, the General Gregorio Álvarez regarded as moderate Armelino which was succeeded as president.
