Apatou

Apatou is a French municipality with 6975 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Overseas Territory of French Guyana.

History

In the years 1877-1887, the two French researchers Crevaux Jules and Henri Coudreau excluded from the French colonial possessions against the Dutch colony of Guyana, which served them Apatou called locals as guides and porters. As a reward for their services to the locals was awarded the area around present-day Apatou.

Apatou created in 1976 by ​​secession from the former greater community Grand- Santi- Papaïchton - Apatou.

Geography

Apatou lies on the River Maroni. To date, there is no road connection so that you can Apatou reach just over the river. It takes about 2 hours with the trains running on the Maroni pirogues of Saint- Laurent- du- Maroni to get there.

The construction of a road to Saint -Laurent- du- Maroni, however, was planned for 2007.
