Geography

The municipality is located in the Apen belonging to Oldenburg Geest natural unit of the Aper Geest edge. It is located in the catchment area of the river Ems and thus even in the tidal area. History

First historical mentions of the place Apen can already be found in 1230, when the Knights of Apen contributed to the Count of Oldenburg military service.
