Apollonius Dyscolus

Dyskolos Apollonius lived in the 2nd century AD in Alexandria and is considered one of the greatest Greek grammarians. He wrote a work on the first syntax, the grammatike the Techne of Dionysius Thrax added. His name is frequently quoted in the Latinized form Apollonius Dyscolus.

He was the son of Mnesitheus and spent his entire life in Alexandria; more is known about his life. He was known as Dyskolos, that is " hardly satisfy " due to his irascible and strong analytical personality, and wrote extensively about the speeches. From twenty books that are mentioned in the Suda, remained four receive: the above syntax, adverbs, conjunctions and pronouns. He had included major influence on subsequent generations of grammarians, his son Aelius Herodianus.

He treats in his work the parts of speech and their assembly in the sentence, ie the syntactical connection. Among other things, the infinitive and the personal pronouns are examined therein. In Arens ( 1974:28 f ) a part can be found translated:
