Aqua Claudia

The Aqua Claudia was an ancient Roman aqueduct ( aqueduct ) to supply the city of Rome.

History

The Aqua Claudia was like the Anio Novus started 38 AD under the emperor Caligula and completed in 52 AD under the emperor Claudius. The two water lines were inaugurated together on August 1. Your construction costs amounted to 350 million sesterces.

After just ten years of use, the supply line for a period of nine years was interrupted in 71 to Emperor Vespasian to restore AD and Emperor Titus had it repaired ten years later again.

Southeast of the Porta Maggiore, a piece of the Aqua Claudia was included from 271 by bricking up the sheets in the Aurelian walls.

Water management

The main sources of the Aqua Claudia, Caeruleus and Curtius, located approximately 445 m are located on the left side of the 38th milestone of the Via Sublacensis away.

The channel length was about 69 km. The channel was mostly underground. Depending on the season, he led up to 191 190 cubic meters per day. After the " filter canister ", near the seventh milestone of the Via Latina, the Aqua Claudia was performed on the last 13 kilometers with aboveground arch structures in the direction of the city.

Part of the Anio Novus was built on the Aqua Claudia, the design formed a monumental arch, called the Porta Maggiore, before they parted, and the Aqua Marcia and Aqua Tepula crossed.

Water line of Emperor Nero ( Arcus Neroniani )

After Emperor Nero the Arcus Neroniani (also Arcus Caelimontani ), was built by a branch of the Aqua Claudia, all 14 Roman districts with their water could be supplied. The Arcus Neroniani initially led over a length of two kilometers to the temple of the deified ( divus ) Claudius on the Caelian Hill.

Nero used this water to feed his huge palace in Rome, the Domus Aurea, the " Golden House ", and it was the Emperor Domitian, who had extended the arch construction up to the Palatine. To this end, the valley between the two hills had to be overcome by one of the most daring buildings of ancient Rome.

The sheets had a wingspan of 7.75 meters, the pillars had a height of 2.30 meters and a width of 2.10 meters. The structure measured 16 feet at its highest point and was only built with bricks.
