Aqua Tepula

The Aqua Tepula is an ancient Roman aqueduct ( aqueduct ) to supply the city of Rome.

History

The Aqua Tepula was built in 125 BC by the censors Gnaeus Servilius Caepio and Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla. Marcus Agrippa Vipsanius let them connect 33 BC with the Aqua Iulia. Between 11 and 4 BC it was repaired under Emperor Augustus.

The name was derived from the temperature of the water, the lukewarm arrived in Rome.

Water management

The source version of Aqua Tepula is near the Via Latina east of Rome at Tusculum. Agrippa increased the flow by he dined the previous channel with water from the Aqua Julia. The 18 km long pipeline delivered 19,000 cubic meters per day.

The Aqua Tepula reached the city of Rome at the Porta Maggiore, where they crossed the Aqua Claudia and the Anio Novus along with the Aqua Marcia. From there, it then follows the same route as the Marcia aqueduct that runs through the Porta Viminal, as opposed to Aqua Tepula it supplies the Aventine.
