Araucaria hunsteinii is a plant of the genus Araucaria (Araucaria ). It is endemic in the northeast of the island of New Guinea.

Description

Appearance and bark

Araucaria hunsteinii grows as evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 85 meters and diameter at breast height of up to 3 meters. The growth habit is pyramidal; with increasing age, the crown opens increasingly more and more and flattens off. The dark brown, resinous bark is cracked and it scroll korkige parts from. The bark of the branches arranged in whorls is dark red.

There is Heterophyllie. On young trees the leaves are pfriemförmig. On older trees, the needle- shaped leaves with a length of 6 to 15 centimeters and a width of 1 to 2 centimeters are formed flat and lanceolate. The leaf veins are straight. Cones and seeds

Occurrence and use

The natural range of Araucaria hunsteinii includes the Bulolo Valley in northeastern New Guinea. Further populations there should be in the Owen Stanley Mountains and the Hunstein Mountains.

In Papua New Guinea it is grown in plantations. The area of ​​planted stands comprises about 8000 acres. This species was introduced for experimental purposes in Australia, Fiji and the Malay Peninsula. The trade name is " Klinki Pine ".

One finds Araucaria hunsteinii at altitudes 520-2100 m, where it forms mainly with various book plants mixed stands.

Threats and conservation

Araucaria hunsteinii is listed in the IUCN Red List as "low risk". It is noted, however, that a re-evaluation of risks is required. The main hazard reasons the exploitation of the forests for the production of high quality wood and use are mentioned as farmland. Furthermore, fire and feral pigs are a threat to the livestock population; whereas in Papua New Guinea exports of Araukarienholz is prohibited.
