Archduchess Maria Carolina of Austria (1740–1741)

Maria Carolina von Habsburg (born 12 January 1740 in Vienna, † 25 January 1741 ibid ) was the third child of Maria Theresa and Francis Stephen of Lorraine.

Life

In the third pregnancy of Maria Theresa, the expectations on an archduke were very large. Accordingly, great was the disappointment when, on January 12, 1740 the third girl came into the world. It was baptized on the evening of the same day and received at the express request of Maria Theresa the name Maria Josepha Johanna Antonia Karolina Ernestina. As the first-born Maria Elisabeth (1737-1740) already died young, was Maria Carolina as a Third Born until her untimely death in second place in the succession.

Early death

On 24 January 1741 Maria Carolina became ill suddenly heavy, they were shaken by violent convulsions and died around noon the next day. The cause of death, the convulsions were accepted, now known as tetany or spasmophilia. On the corpse of an autopsy was performed, but gave no explanation for the death. She was buried in the Imperial Crypt, more precisely in the Maria Theresa Crypt, in Vienna. The coffin of Maria Carolina is located in an alcove. To the left is the tomb of Maria Theresa, the daughter of Joseph II and Isabella of Parma, whose coffin is still a position further to the left.

Eponymous sisters

The name Maria Carolina was still given two other children, Maria Theresa. So the tenth child ( the seventh daughter) of the regent was given the name Maria Karolina ( born on September 17, 1748, died shortly after birth ). Also, the thirteenth child born on August 13, 1752, was named Maria Carolina. This later became Queen of Naples and Sicily, and died 1814.
