Maria Anna of Savoy

Maria Anna Carolina Pia, Princess of Savoy ( born September 19, 1803 in Rome, † May 4, 1884 in Prague) was Empress of Austria.

Life

She was a daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria -Este and Victor Emmanuel I.

1831 she married ( by proxy Transportation ) her cousin 2nd degree Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Through his accession to the throne as Emperor Ferdinand I in 1835, she was Empress of Austria, followed a year later in Prague, the crowned Queen of Bohemia. Although she never learned German, she was very popular in her new home. Every year on July 26, there was the occasion of their names celebration of a festival. Ferdinand I abdicated in 1848, and the couple moved from then from Vienna to Prague and to Moravia.

Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss father and son devoted to the Empress own songs, most famously the Annen- Polka, which was premiered on July 24, 1852 in the Vienna Prater. In 1862 (9th district) was named Marianne alley for her in Vienna Alsergrund. In Graz Annenstraße bears her name.

After her death in 1884 Maria Anna ( as was her late husband in 1875 ) was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna.
