Archduke Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Austria-Este

Archduke Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Austria -Este ( born April 25, 1781 Milan, † November 5, 1850 at Schloss Ebenzweier in Altmünster ) was an Austrian field marshal and governor general of Galicia and Transylvania.

Life

Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Este was born as the second son of Archduke Ferdinand Karl Anton Joseph and Maria Beatrice d' Este on April 25, 1781 in Milan. He was the brother of Duke Francis IV of Modena ( † 1846). In 1799, after having attended the Military Academy at Wiener Neustadt, he joined the army and became Major General in 1800.

He was in the war against France ( 1805), the supreme command of the 3rd Austrian army corps was duly drawn up in Swabia, and, after the act annexed passed as Chief of General Staff Lieutenant-General Mack has been in his position at the Iller between Ulm and Günzburg, cut off was defeated by Marshal Ney at Günzburg on 9 October.

Ferdinand, however, escaped, while Mack capitulated in Ulm, fell over Geislingen and Oettingen with about 2000 cavalry to Bohemia, while infantry and heavy artillery of the pursuing cavalry of Murat at the Altmühltherme hands. Then he was given the command of the imperial forces in Bohemia, organized the militia, provided the Bavaria several happy meeting and covered the right wing of the great Confederate Army until the Battle of Austerlitz.

His heart was buried separately and is located in the Loreto chapel, Vienna St. Augustine's Church.
