Archytas (crater)

31.35

Archytas is an impact crater on Earth's Moon. It overlaps the northern edge of Mare Frigoris. To the northwest lies the comparably sized crater Timaeus, the smaller craters Protagoras is in the opposite direction to the southeast. In the southwest, on the opposite edge of the moon the sea you can see the conspicuous by its dark crater floor crater Plato.

The rim of Archytas is sharp and shows little signs of erosion by subsequent impacts. The outer rim is nearly circular and has a slight bulge just to the southeast on. The crater interior is uneven and a ring of material has been deposited at the base of the inner walls. East of the crater mid- point rises a pair of central peaks.

The lunar surface in the vicinity of the crater is in the south due to the lava flows that have shaped the Moon Sea, relatively flat. In the north and north-east the terrain is uneven. The Northwest of Archytas satellite crater Archytas B forms a flattened by lava bay on the edge of Mare Frigoris.
