Arduinna

Arduinna (also: Ardvinna, Ardbinna ) was a female Celtic deity of the forest and eponym of the Ardennes. The name is possibly related to the Irish and the Welsh ard Ardd (both " high"). The deity is allocated based on the interpretatio romana the Roman Diana, a mythological similarity to the Black Forest Goddess Abnoba as a mountain deity is accepted.

Locations

A worship could be detected in the northwestern Gaul and the Gallo- Germanic mixing zones in the left bank of the Rhine. So in 1859 when clearing work in Gey ( Düren, Roman province of Germania inferior), found on the slopes of the Eifel, which were originally seen as part of the Ardennes, the " Deae Ardbinnae " dedicated inscription stone unknown time position (now in the Rheinische Landesmuseum Bonn).

One discovered statuette in bronze, it represents a youthful goddess in hunting garb, the armed riding on a boar with a bow and arrow. However, it is not unequivocally established whether this is really the goddess. The exact location is unknown, the statue is now in the Museum of Antiquities National from Saint -Germain -en- Laye ..

In Rome, a statue of Diana is obtained which is provided in addition to other gods name with the inscription ARDVINNE. It was dedicated by M. Quartinius Sabinus, a native Remer and Guard soldiers, the goddess of his homeland. The partially destroyed statue has been incorrectly completed, based on older figures, however, is the original form yet known. Even the name ARDVINNE, although once present, are no longer readable.
