Remi

The Remer (Latin Remi ) were next to the Suessiones one of the largest Belgian- Celtic tribes ( Belger ). They were in the area between the rivers Aisne and Matrona (Marne) sedentary ( today's region of Champagne in northern France ).

Even before the Roman period the Remer beat their own money and were, as the Leuker, known as champions in hurling projectiles ( ... optimus excusso Leucus Remusque lacerto ).

They conducted repeated war with the tribes of the Parisii and senones. Under Iccius and Andecombogius they already allied themselves with Caesar in 57 BC and supported him during the Gallic Wars, which they later the honorary title foederati led and advanced to become one of the most important tribes of Gaul. After their capital Bibrax had been destroyed, the Romans helped them to build a new capital. This was the time the second largest city of Gaul, Durocorterum, lat Durocortorum Remorum. In Roman times, the short form draw became common, from which the present name derives Reims.
