Arkhangelsk Governorate

The government Arkhangelsk (Russian Архангельская губерния / Archangelskaja Gubernija, scientific transliteration Archangel'skaja Gubernija ) was a province in the Russian Empire and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which existed from 1796 to 1929. The capital of the Gouvernementes was the city of Arkhangelsk.

Location

The government Arkhangelsk was located in the northwest of the Russian Empire. It was bounded on the north by the White Sea and the Arctic Ocean. In the south east it bordered on the Tobolsk province, in the south of the province of Vologda and on the southwest by the province Olonets and the Kingdom of Sweden ( 1809 Grand Duchy of Finland in 1917 and Finland). The government Arkhangelsk was thus the largest area of ​​government of the European part of Russia.

History

In 1780, the existing in the same place Gouvernement Archangelgorod ( Wologodskoje namestnitschestwo наместничество Вологодское, ) was dissolved by decree of Catherine the Great and his areas part of the Viceroyalty of Vologda. This was divided into oblasts Vologda, Arkhangelsk and Veliky Ustjug. 1784, the areas of the Arkhangelsk Oblast were split off as the Viceroyalty of Arkhangelsk. The Viceroyalty of Arkhangelsk was eventually renamed Arkhangelsk province on December 12, 1796 by ukase Emperor Paul I.. Simultaneously, the government Olonets was disbanded, with a portion of its territory passed into the possession of the government of Archangel.

After the October Revolution, the government of Arkhangelsk lost by the creation of the Gouvernementes Murmansk (1918 ), the Karelian Workers' Commune (1920, 1922 Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) and the Autonomous Oblast Komi (1922 ) a large part of its territory.

In 1929 the provinces of Arkhangelsk, Vologda and Northern Dvina and the Autonomous Oblast Komi were resolved by the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and member of the Northern circuit.

Structure and Population

With its inception in 1796, the province of Arkhangelsk was divided into the eight Ujesde Kolski, Kemski, Oneschski, Schenkurski, Cholmogorski, Archangelski, Pineschski and Mesenski. After some administrative reforms in the 19th century, the province of Arkhangelsk included in 1897 an area of ​​845,275 km ² and counted 346 536 inhabitants, of which 47.26 % are male and 52.74 % were women.
