Onega, Russia

Onega (Russian Онега ) is a city in North-West Russia. It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 21,359 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 140 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk on the right bank of the Onega near its confluence with the White Sea.

The town of Onega is the Oblast subordinated administratively directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was in the 14th century ( according to other data already in 1137 ) of Novgorod founded as Ust- Onega and received in 1780 under the name Oneg city law. 1784 the urban district center and part of the government of Archangel and named in Onega.
