Puksoozero

Puksoosero (Russian Пуксоозеро ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia. The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 1212 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in Rajon Plesetsk.

Geography

Puksoosero is located about 216 km south of Arkhangelsk Oblasthauptstadt. The nearest large town is the Rajonverwaltungszentrum Plesetsk around 20 km north-west location. From south to north of the 106 km long river Puksa crosses the village. South of Puksoosero with the homonymous lake Puksoosero, which was created by damming the Puksa.

Puksoosero is the administrative center of the municipality Puksooserskoje to the next Puksoosero the village of Belo-Ozero heard.

History

Puksoosero emerged in the 1930s as a special settlement for kulaks, as part of the dekulakization. With the help of the use of prisoners began in 1936 the construction of the Mechenga railway line ( Мехреньгская железная дорога ) of Puksa after Puksoosero. The route mainly served the timber industry, has expanded steadily in the 1940s and 1950s, linking a network of storage colonies. 1938, a cellulose plant was built by the prisoners of the Gulag Onega -ITL near the settlement, which was commissioned in 1939. The cellulose plant with its 600 employees, produced cellulose, which served as raw material for the manufacture of gunpowder in the town of Vyborg. For water supply of cellulose work which Puksa was dammed by a dam, which merged into three smaller lakes Puksoosero. The ever-growing settlement in 1944 received the status of an urban-type settlement.

After the dissolution of the Onega - ITL 1942 Mechengsker branch of the Gulag Kargopol -ITL was created with headquarters in Puksoosero. In 1954, the branch office into an independent Gulag, the MECHRENG -ITL. The times up to 14,800 prisoners, the existing camp until 1960, were used exclusively in the timber industry. According to the official abolition of the Gulag, remained in Puksoosero numerous prisons. So were in Soviet times in and outside the settlement 14 labor and reeducation camps ( исправительно - трудовая колония ) where more than 15,000 people were detained, who were employed in the timber industry.

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the labor camps were closed. The operation of not more competitive cellulosic plant, one of the main employers in the settlement, was founded in 1994 finally set. In 2001, also was the closure of the railway line Puksa - Puksoosero.

Economy and infrastructure

In Puksoosero only two smaller companies are located. Many residents work in the nearby towns of Mirny and Plesetsk. The village has a school, a hospital and a boarding school. The only sight of the village is the lake Puksoosero, which is a popular destination for locals from the surrounding villages and towns during summer. The town has no rail connection. About a country road is a bus to the settlement Puksa, which at the railway highway Moscow - Arkhangelsk lies - Vologda.
