Maloshuyka

Maloschuika (Russian Малошуйка ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia. The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2886 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in Rajon Onega.

Geography

Maloschuika is located about 176 kilometers southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. The nearest town Onega is located about 38 kilometers northeast of Maloschuika and is also the administrative center of the raion. Due to the settlement of the same river Maloschuika, which flows about seven kilometers north of the settlement in the Onegabucht of the White Sea runs.

History

Maloschuika originated in the late 1930s during the construction of the railway line Oboserski - Soroka (now Belomorsk ). It was named the station after the same about 4 kilometers north village, which is now called Abramowskaja ( Абрамовская ). In 1943 Maloschuika the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded. 1949 ( according to other sources 1955) was the Maloschuikaer narrow gauge railway ( Малошуйская узкоколейная железная дорога ), which had been built by prisoners, opened. By the year 1970, a stretch of narrow gauge railway led southwest to Peringosero ( Перингозеро ) and in the uninhabited settlement Cholmy ( Холмы ), which served both forestry. 1970, this narrow-gauge lines were dismantled and the settlement Peringosero closed. The second south running line was also used for timber transport, but proved after the construction of a highway to be unprofitable and was also dismantled in 2006.

Economy and infrastructure

Maloschuika is a station of the Northern Railway on the route Oboserski - Belomorsk. Rail transport is an important industry. From Maloschuika trains in the directions of Moscow, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk. In addition to the railway industry, the forest industry is another major employer in the settlement.
