Kamenka, Arkhangelsk Oblast

Kamenka (Russian Каменка ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia. The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2582 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in Rajon mesas.

Geography

Kamenka is located about 222 kilometers northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. It lies on the left bank of the 966 km long river mesas around 30 km from its mouth into the Mesenbusen of the White Sea. The nearest town is the mesas is also the administrative center of the raion and lies about 5 km east of Kamenka on the other side of the river. Due to the settlement of the same name Kamenka River, which flows near the city in the mesas and after the settlement is named runs.

History

The present settlement of Kamenka was established in 1892 as part of the construction of a sawmill by the brothers Ruschnikow at the mouth of Kamenka in the mesas. The processed wood was delivered primarily via the seaport abroad. In the late 1920s there were already two sawmills in the settlement, which by the larger sawmill Mesenski number 48 ( Мезенский ( № 48) ) were replaced.

With the dissolution of the government of Arkhangelsk in 1929 the city became part of the newly founded Rajon mesas. Kamenka in 1938 received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and Transport

The main industry in Kamenka is the forestry and timber industry.

Kamenka has a seaport from which there is a connection to the city mesas. Neither Kamenka yet the nearby town of Messines is a railway connection in possession. From mesas composed from December to March and July to November, a bus service in the city of Arkhangelsk. In addition, throughout the year there is a route from the airport mesas in to Arkhangelsk.
