Koryazhma

Korjazhma (Russian Коряжма ) is a city in North-West Russia. It has 39 641 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Geography

The city is located on the left bank of the Vychegda, a right tributary of the Northern Dvina. It is located about 835 km southeast of Arkhangelsk Oblasthauptstadt. The nearest large towns are about 12 km away Solvychegodsk and approximately 30 km upstream of the Vychegda lying Kotlas.

The climate is subarctic marked continental, with long cold winters and short mild summers.

History

Korjazhma was created in 1535 with the founding of St. Nicholas - Korjaschemski monastery ( Николо - Коряжемский монастырь ).

1954 began the construction of a pulp and paper combine, through which also the city experienced a boom. It was completed in 1961.

1956 was urban-type settlement and received on August 15, 1985 city law.

Economy

The main business of the city is still the pulp and paper mill ( Котласский целлюлозно - бумажный комбинат ). With more than 5000 employees, it is the largest paper mill in Russia and Europe.

Other important industries are the chemical and building materials industries.
