Shipitsyno

Schipizyno (Russian Шипицыно ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia. It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 3452 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Schipizyno is located about 470 km southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. The settlement is situated on the left bank of the Northern Dvina in Rajon Kotlas, just over six miles north- west of the center Kotlas away.

History

The exact founding date Schipizynos is not known. It is certain that the settlement existed already in the 17th century. Probably Schipizyno was originally a settlement founded by Old Believers, who came from around Moscow. The name of the village derives from the Russian word for dog rose ( шиповник / Shipovnik ) which bewuchsen the banks of the Dvina in the founding years of the settlement. The settlers called the plant Schipiza ( шипица ). From this name, the first settlement name Schipitschicha deduced ( Шипичиха ), which in the 70s of the 19th century to the present name Schipizyno. Initially, the economy was based Schipizynos mainly on agriculture and crafts, especially the manufacture of felt boots. Its convenient location on the Dvina and the nearby forests made ​​Schipizyno but soon the ideal area for forestry. Thus, a sawmill was founded in the city in 1907, which quickly became one of the largest companies in the city.

In 1950 it received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy of the settlement still relies on large parts of the forest. There is also a repair shop. Through the settlement the highway P -157 runs. The nearest train stations are in Kotlas and Jadricha eight kilometers away. In the summer months also operates a ferry between Kotlas and Schipizyno. The urbanization has a hospital, a cultural center, a middle school and a secondary school.
