Armenian Catholic Eparchy of Our Lady of Nareg in New York

The Eparchy of Our Lady of Nareg in New York (Latin: Eparchia Dominae nostrae Naregensis, German: Eparchy of Our Lady of Nareg in New York ) is a location in the U.S. eparchy of the Armenian Catholic Church, headquartered in New York City.

History

The history of the Armenian Catholic community in New York began in the late nineteenth century. In 1896 the Patriarch of Cilicia, Stephano Bedros Azarian X. appointed the priest Mardiros Megerian as pastor of the Armenian community in New York.

The Patriarchal Vicar for appointed Monsignor Margerian took care of the immigrant victims of the Armenian genocide. His successor, Monsignor Haroutyoun Maldjian, the mission served during the world economic crisis of 1929 until 1933.

Pope John Paul II founded the Apostolic Constitution Divini Pastoris the Apostolic Exarchate of America and Canada on July 3, 1981. September 12, 2005, it was charged with the Apostolic Constitution Qui nuper successimus the eparchy, and received its present name.
