Arnes, Terra Alta

Arnes is a municipality in the Spanish comarca of Terra Alta province of Tarragona (Catalonia ).

The place in the far west of the province of Tarragona, on the border with Aragon has 479 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) to 43 km ². It is located on a small hill some 500 meters above the river Algars. On the south side of the site towards Tortosa drops while on the flatter north side is the level of Algars.

History

It seems that in the area of Arnes initially existed the farm of a Muslim, it was conquered by Alfonso the Chaste later and soon afterwards came into the possession of the Knights Templar from Horta de Sant Joan. After the fall of the Templars, he was dependent on St John.

Attractions

Particularly worth seeing is the town hall, one of the most important buildings of the Catalan Renaissance, which was built in 1584 by Joan Vilabona de Queretes. In addition, the three-nave Baroque parish church of Santa Magdalena is mentioned. It was built on the ruins of a Gothic church from 1693.
