Arnoldo Alemán

José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo ( born January 23, 1946 in Managua) was 1997-2002 President of Nicaragua.

After studying law, he worked as a lawyer until 1979. After the seizure of power by the Sandinistas, he spent six months in jail since he was associated with the Somoza regime. From 1990 to 1995 he was mayor of the capital Managua and 10 January 1997 to 10 January 2002, President of the country.

In December 2003 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for embezzlement of state funds in the amount of 10 million U.S. dollars. So far, he did not have to compete thanks to his immunity this punishment. Instead, he is under house arrest. A portion of its assets, located in bank accounts in Panama and the United States was frozen. Nevertheless, he continues to play an important role in the country's politics.
