Arnoldo Devonish

Arnoldo Devonish Vicente Romero ( born June 15, 1932 † January 1, 1997 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan track and field athlete. He won the bronze medal in the triple jump in 1952 and is still the only Venezuelans, who won an Olympic medal in athletics.

At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki Devonish jumped 15.24 meters in the qualification and was second best behind the Brazilian Adhemar Ferreira da Silva. In the final Devonish jumped 15.04 meters in the first attempt, which was on the fifth place, the second attempt to Devonish increased to 15.52 meters and sat down behind Ferreira da Silva to second place. Then Devonish was able to complete no more jumps due to an injury, but was surpassed only by Leonid Shcherbakov. This Devonish won the bronze medal, the first medal for Venezuela in the history of the Olympic Games.

At the Pan American Games in 1955 in Mexico City Devonish jumped his personal best with 16.13 meters, which was second behind Ferreira da Silva, who set a new world record with 16.56 meters. Due to a dispute with his association Devonish could then not compete in international competitions for several years. His comeback in 1961, he celebrated by winning the triple jump at the South American Championship, 1963, he was able to defend that title. Devonish finished his career after the Pan American Games in 1963.

Devonishs longest jump in the long jump was 7.41 meters, which he jumped in 1953. At a height of 1.87 m his competition weight was 70 kg.
