It is also the highest point of the communities Arosa, Lantsch / Lenz and Alvaneu, whose boundaries converge at the summit. Thus, the mountain is located on the border between the districts Plessur and Albula.

Location and description

From the wide, undeveloped, lying in the crystalline Summit will be three ridges, compared Northeast ( Erzhorn ), South ( pizza naira in Lenzerheide ) and northwest ( Parpan Rothorn / Älplihorn ). The northern and western flank consist of rocky steps of poor quality, from the southeast rich scree up to the ridges. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over Central Grisons and in particular in the Horn of Arosa White in the northwest and to the east of the Strelakette limited Arosa mountain shell that you practically can not see the neighboring Parpan Rothorn. Due to its outstanding location ( Swiss Federal holiday) are widely visible height ignited fire regularly on the top of Arosa Rothorn on August 1.

Routes to the summit

The Arosa Rothorn can be reached on a challenging trail on the Erzhornsattel since 1905 Arosa. One has the choice between the route over the Älplisee (T4 ) or via Welschtobel - Ramozhütte (T3). About one kilometers northwest of Arosa Rothorn is the summit of the Rothorn Parpaner. About the northwest ridge connecting the two peaks, the Arosa Rothorn can be well mounted also from Lenzerheide on a now- officially marked and partially exposed path (T4). Finally, a rise along the southern ridge of the Ramozhütte, the Furcletta (T4) and from Alp Sanaspans (T5 ) is here possible. In winter, the main ascent leads from the Ramozhütte over the chair to the uppermost part of the Nordostgrats (Route 191). In good snow conditions also can from Parpan Rothorn, the route can be selected via the northwest ridge ( walk ).

Tourist use

The first known winter ascent of the Rothorn succeeded the Basel brothers Egger along with Ed. Geigy in 1886 with snowshoes from Arosa. 1893 climbed Fritz and Carl Egger together with E. Toutain and Carl Stäubli the mountain also for the first time on skis. From 1914 found until about the middle of the twenties of the last century at the Arosa Rothorn summer ski race, among other things with world champion David Zogg instead. As a result, the Rothorn became a popular and frequently visited skiing and hiking a mountain, which, however, mechanically - never opened - mainly for reasons of nature conservation and landscape protection. Also from the 2013/14 realized ski area Arosa Lenzerheide, the area is not affected by the Arosa Rothorn.

Historical

At Arosa Rothorn and on Erzhorn iron ores and radiolarite and other mineral resources were mined in the Middle Ages and smelted in the furnaces in the Isel at Arosa. Because of this early opening up of the area and because the summit can be relatively easily climbed on various routes, the first man to climb Arosa Rothorn has remained unknown. As secured, however, that the geologist Conrad Escher von der Linth in 1806 explored the area and the Rothorn ascended. 1879 and 1959 were exposed ibex in the context of resettlement attempts at Arosa Rothorn.
