Ars-en-Ré

Ars -en- Ré is a municipality with 1315 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the west of the Île de Ré on the French Atlantic coast in the region of Poitou -Charentes in the department of Charente -Maritime.

Ars -en- Ré has been declared by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geography

The village lies at an altitude of zero to 15 m and has an area of 10.95 km ².

The port is dependent on tides and falls almost completely dry at low tide. The water level can also be held by means of a gate as well. He now serves as a harbor for ships. A sailing school is also located here.

Most of the streets in the center of Ars are so narrow that only one car this can happen, so many are marked as one-way streets.

History

The Port of Ars was formerly visited by ships from the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries, which were loaded with salt here.
