Årstabroarna ( the Årstabrücken ) are two parallel railway bridges over the Årstaviken in southern Stockholm, join the district Enskede - Årsta Vantör with Södermalm. The older, eastern Årstabrücke dates from 1929, it is protected as a public Byggnadsminne. The newer, western Årstabrücke was inaugurated in 2005.

The eastern Årstabrücke

The eastern, older Årstabrücke was designed by architect Cyrillus Johansson and constructed by Ernst Nilsson and Salomon Kasarnowsky, two engineers who had participated later in the realization of Tranebergsbron and Västerbron. Construction took six years between 1924 and 1929. Architect Johansson was inspired by ancient aqueducts and designed 19 arches made of concrete. In the southern fairway a steel truss spans the Årstaviken and in the northern fairway, two high pylons, which served to raise an entire road segment when needed raise. Over the bridge lead two railway tracks. The bridge was also prepared for it to take an additional lane for the road, which was never realized. The bridge was inaugurated on 23 November 1929 by King Gustav V. Its length is 753 meters, and a width of 9 meters. It is segelbar up to a height of 26 meters. The old Årstabron was extensively renovated in 2007. In November 2012, the work on the bridge itself were completed, a jetty was until the summer of 2013, built and restored the vicinity of the bridge.

A certain amount of fame the Årstabrücke when she in 1982 in the music video The Day Before You Came ABBA played a major role in the group.

The western Årstabrücke

The western, newer Årstabrücke was necessary because the web traffic could no longer be adequately served by and to Stockholm from the old bridge. An international architectural competition was announced by the client Banverket, the British architect Norman Foster won. He envisioned an extremely slender bridge that should interfere in no case has since become the popular appearance of the old bridge.

In 2000, construction began on the new bridge, it is a pre-stressed reinforced concrete structure that spans ten pillars on the Årstaviken. She was so slim designed so that the engineers of the construction company Skanska had problems to accommodate the huge amounts of steel reinforcement. The double-curved shape of the bridge underside presented the carpenters and steel fixers remains a challenge. The low height also allowed for no conventional track bed with sleepers and ballast, the rails were bolted directly without thresholds in the concrete runway. The concrete is colored red, in a shade that matches the traditional Falun red, the said Norman Foster, was an appropriate color for a Swedish bridge. The foundations of the bridge piers are located at a depth of 20 to 35 meters below the water surface on a solid rock. Over the bridge lead two railway tracks and two pedestrian or bicycle paths. The new Årstabrücke was on 28 August 2005 by King Carl XVI. Gustaf inaugurated.

The new bridge is 833 meters long, 19.5 meters wide and has a height of 26 meters segelbare.
