Artedidraconidae
Artedidraco loennbergi
The Artedidraconidae (in honor of Peter Artedi, and Gr. Drako = dragon) are a family of Antarctic fish ( Notothenioidei ). They live at the bottom of the Southern Ocean.
Features
The fish are elongated, similar to the bullheads are bottom dwellers and four to 34 inches long. Your body is scaleless. You have two distinctly separate dorsal fins, the first is short and is supported by one to seven flexible spines. The mouth is vorstülpbar ( protaktil ). At the lower jaw they have a chin Bartel. The operculum is busy with hump-like spines, the gill membranes grown together over a wide area on Kiemenisthmus. The types of Artedidraconidae have 33 to 41 vertebrae and four or five Hypuralen ( bones of the tail skeleton ).
System
The Artedidraconidae were previously assigned as a subfamily of the Antarctic predators ( Harpagiferidae ), but then elevated to family rank. But they form a monophyletic clade with the Harpagiferidae and their sister group.
