Arthur Brooke (poet)

Arthur Brooke (also: Arthur Broke, † March 19, 1563 at sea ) was an English playwright and translator.

Brookes in 1562, first published narrative poem " The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet " was most likely William Shakespeare as a source for Romeo and Juliet. Brookes narrative itself has come models, including the 1559 short story of the French poet Pierre Boaistuau entitled " Rhomeo et Julietta " and presumably short stories by Matteo Bandello of 1554 and Luigi da Porto of 1530, also by the tragic lovers " Giulietta e Romeo " negotiated.
