Luigi da Porto

Luigi Da Porto (* 1485 in Vicenza, † May 10, 1529 ) was an Italian author. He was the author of the short story Romeo and Juliet who rewrote William Shakespeare in a drama.

Da Porto wrote the novella in his villa in Montorso Vicentino near Vicenza. The title was " Historia novellamente Ritrovata di due nobili amanti " ( " Rewritten story of two noble lovers " ), published by 1530th On the origin of the story of two unhappy lovers is disputed, where Da Porto probably by a history of Masuccio Salernitano, also called Mariotto e Ganozza, was inspired, in which he introduced many new elements. These were re-used in Shakespeare's drama.

Da Porto moved the story in Verona (then a strategically important city of Venice), in the time of Bartolomeo della Scala ( 1301-1304 ) on. The names Romeus (later Romeo ) and Giulietta ( Juliet in English, Julia in German ) come from him. He also created the characters of Mercutio, Tybalt, and Paris Laurenzo.
