Arthur Gardiner Butler

Arthur Gardiner Butler ( * June 27, 1844 in London, † May 28 1925 in Beckenham, Kent ) was a British entomologist and ornithologist Arachnologe, who worked a long time for the British Museum to the systematics of birds, insects and spiders.

Life and work

Arthur Gardiner Butler grew up in London's Chelsea at Cheyne Walk. He was the son of Thomas Butler, an employee of the British Museum, 1857 Assistant Secretary of Antonio Panizzi, the director of the library of the British Museum, was. Butler was educated at St. Paul 's School. He later received a one-year art classes at the Art School in South Kensington. From 1863 to the deterioration of his health in 1901, he worked for the British Museum. In 1879 he became assistant curator of arthropods department and 1895 of the insect department. In recognition of his entomological work Butler 1893 an honorary doctorate from the Western University of Pennsylvania. In addition to several entomological works published Butler books about birds (especially on the Oologie and aviculture ) and he wrote for the magazine, The Feathered World. In his works he arachnological dealt among other things with the Arachnofauna of Australia, the Galapagos Islands and Madagascar.

Butler was a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, the Linnean Society of London, the Zoological Society of London and member of the British Ornithologists ' Union.
