Arthur Peppercorn

Arthur Henry Peppercorn ( born January 29, 1889 in Leominster, † March 3, 1951 ) was the last chief engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway ( LNER ).

1905 began his career as an apprentice with the Great Northern Railway (GNR ). He took office as chief engineer of the LNER on 1 July 1946 as a successor to Edward Thompson, but was similar in many respects to its predecessor, Sir Nigel Gresley more. He completed several projects from the time of Edward Thompson.

However, he was best known for his LNER Class A1 Peppercorn and the LNER Peppercorn Class A2. These vehicles were known as some of the best steam locomotives ever used in the UK. He went one year after the nationalization of the British railways and establishment of British Railways in 1949 in retirement. Overall, he was three and a half years as chief designer.
