Arthur Richards, 1st Baron Milverton

Arthur Frederick Richards, 1st Baron Milverton GCMG ( born February 21, 1885 in Bristol, † 27 October 1978) was a British governor and represented the British monarch in the British colonies North Borneo, Gambia, Fiji, Jamaica and Nigeria.

Life

The son of William Rogers Richards from Bristol served as Governor of North Borneo in 1930 to 1933 and of The Gambia on 12 April 1934 to 22 October 1936. Thereafter he was appointed as Governor of Fiji on 28 November 1936 in this position he was also the high Commissioner in the British overseas territories in the Western Pacific. A post he held until 19 August 1938 after which he was assigned as governor of Jamaica. He was until July 1943 until he went to Nigeria and from 18 December 1943, where he worked as governor until 5 February 1948.

Richards was taken in 1933 in the Order of St Michael and St George as a Companion. In 1935 he was appointed Knight Commander raised this Order, 1942 Knight Grand Cross. In the hereditary nobility, he was raised as Baron Milverton, of Lagos and of Clifton in the City of Bristol, in 1947.

Richards died in October 1978 at the age of 93 years. His title passed to his eldest son Fraser Arthur Richard Richards.
