Artigas is the capital of the department in Uruguay.

It is located right on the Brazilian border in the north of Uruguay, 601 kilometers from the capital, Montevideo.

History

The city was founded on September 12, 1852 by Don Carlos Catala under the name of San Eugenio del Cuareim. In 1915 she received then the name of the Uruguayan José Gervasio Artigas national hero and was considered by the law Nr.5330 in the category " Ciudad " on 31 August of the same year.

Economy

Artigas is a center for the trade of cereals ( mainly maize ) to Argentina and Brazil. There is an airport, Aeropuerto Internacional de Artigas, and a train station, which serve mainly economic purposes. The mountain slopes and banks in Artigas are great sites for precious stones, agates and amethysts especially. Education

Artigas has a total of four secondary schools ( Liceo ).
