Geography

Location and landscape

The expansion of an area of 11,928 km ² comprising the department is located in the extreme northwest of the country on the border of Argentina and Brazil. The tri-border region in the northwest of the department, at the mouth of the river border with Brazil, the Río Cuareim, in the Uruguay River, the border river to Argentina, Bella Unión is called (Spanish for Beautiful Association ). There lies the controversial river island Isla Brasilera. Capital of the department is Artigas. Other major urban settlements are Bella Unión, Tomás Gomensoro, Baltasar Brum, Las Piedras and Pintadito.

Mineral resources

In Artigas found in the eastern area of the department agate and amethyst deposits at Arroyo Tres Cruces, the Arroyo cuaro, the Arroyo Catalán Grande, the Arroyo Catalán Chico, in the Cuchilla de Belén, in the Cuchilla Catalán, in Cuchilla Yacaré Cururu and at La Bolsa.

History

Artigas was founded in October 1884 from a part of Salto as a new province.

Population

While the total population of the department in 2004 was still 78 019, in the census of 2011, only 73 378 inhabitants were counted. More than half the population of the department lives here in the capital Artigas ( 40 658 inhabitants). (As of Census 2011)

Infrastructure

Education

Artigas has a total of eleven secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 6,551 students are taught by 503 teachers. Four of these Liceos located in the department capital. The oldest Liceo of the department is being moved in Cartesian -like Barrio Centro, founded in 1913, Liceo N º 1 Departamental. (As of December 2008)

Traffic

In the area of the department is situated to the Artigas Airport with links to air traffic. Through the Department performs a somersault coming from the direction of railway line, which is divided into the directions of the ash -like capital and Bella Unión in Baltasar Brum. Furthermore, the department of the following roads will in any case partly traversed Ruta 3, Ruta 4, Ruta 30

Economy

Artigas was formerly one of the most developed departments of the country. His wealth founded mainly on the production of sugar and vegetables. Today, however, occurred in a severe crisis, which has transformed the department into one of the ailing regions of Uruguay.

The leadership of the executive branch of the department, the Office of Intendente, holds Patricia Ayala of the Frente Amplio.
