Rocha is a department in Uruguay. It is located in the southeast of the country on the Atlantic Ocean, on the border with Brazil.

Geography

Location

The department borders the departments Treinta y Tres and Lavalleja to the northwest and west, and Maldonado in the southwest.

Mineral resources

In the Bañados de Rocha in the Middle East of the department is found peat. Furthermore, there are at Aguas Dulces on an approximately 35 kilometer long section between La Paloma and Chuy deposits of black sand (Arenas Negras ). At La Coronilla store salt, magnesia, potassium sulphate and gypsum.

Settlement structure

The capital Rocha has 25,422 inhabitants. The second largest city is Chuy on the border with Brazil, with 9,675 inhabitants. (As of 2011) to the larger settlements of the department include Castillo, Lascano, Velázquez and Cebollatí. There are copious resorts on the Atlantic coast.
