Geography

Location and landscape

The expansion of an area of 11,643 km ² comprising Durazno is a water-rich region, as it is enclosed by the rivers Río Negro and Río Yi. In Río Negro, on the northern boundary of the region, there are three large reservoirs, which were artificially created in order to supply the region over water power plants with energy. The three large reservoirs Rincón del Bonete Baygorria and Palmar have greatly influenced the landscape in this area since its construction. Cerro Chato is at 260 m above sea level, the highest point in Durazno.

Settlement structure

The capital city of Durazno has 34 372 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is the only major town in the department, live in it for almost half of its inhabitants. The department itself belongs beside Flores and Treinta y Tres of the most sparsely populated regions of Uruguay. In 1990 the number of inhabitants per square kilometer was just under five.

Mineral resources

In Durazno exist uranium deposits in Paso de las Piedras. In blanquillo kaolin deposits are present.

Education

Durazno has a total of seven secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 4,423 students are taught by 400 teachers. The oldest Liceo of the department is based in the Department of Capital Durazno, 1913, founded the Liceo Departamental " Dr. Miguel C. Rubino ". (As of December 2008)

About the nearby airport of the capital Santa Bernardina Durazno also has connection to the aviation sector.

Population

During 2004 58.859 inhabitants were counted, was found in the context of the census of 2011, population 57 088. Of these, 28 216 were men and 28,872 women.

The leadership of the executive branch of the department, the Office of Intendente, holds Benjamín Irazábal of the Partido Nacional.
